Historical Description

This stunning piece is a brilliant, crisp white that instantly pops out at the viewer and accentuates the raised surface of the delicate lines used to convey the image. A spoon rests in a translucent cup filled halfway with liquid while joyful sun-like figures dot the piece, adding a sense of animation to the still life scene. While this work itself is a ceramic dish, Picasso creates a border that appears as a serving platter, as if this spoon and cup were being served to the viewer on a plate; he creates the illusion of a plate within a plate, toying with the viewer's visual perception and adding a playful element to this piece

Created in 1952, this original Madoura square dish of white earthenware clay is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
