Historical Description

In this Pablo Picasso Ceramic Petit Soleil (Little Sun), 1968-1969, a delightful sun smiles out at us against a pure black background. Its facial details - eyebrows, nose, and teeth - are complemented by the curves and valleys of the impression itself. This Little Sun appears to be radiating a cheerful glow, instilling any space in which it is placed with a sense of warmth and joy. The open face smiles out upon the viewer and invites them kindly in. The high contrast between the warm red earthy color of the clay and the black engobe decorative coat brings a sharp and clean feeling to the composition. Against the black background, the reddish rays of the sun shine out radiantly, casting a bright light across the plaque. The two sides of the face are almost inversions of one another - the left is black engobe with carved red detailing, while the left side is carved red clay with black engobe detailing on the eyes and mouth. The distinct sides compliment one another, creating a sense of unity and complexity within Pablo Picasso Ceramic Little Sun (Petit Soleil), 1968-1969.

Created in 1968-1969, this rectangular plaque of red earthenware clay printed with black engobe pad is from the edition of 200. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
