Historical Description

Renoir Scène de Thèatre, 1966; Utilizing strong black and white contrasts, Picasso creates an abstract, theatrical piece that suggests actors illuminated on a stage. Faces in profile swoop in to the upper right as if an audience is gazing down on the show. Picasso creates a stage-like setting, depicting drapes to the right and circular lights lining the bottom of the piece. To the left, a patch of light appears as a spotlight, shining down on the actors. At the center of the piece, the actors themselves appear as whimsical subjects, lacking defined forms or clear identities. Picasso encourages the viewer to use his or her imagination to set the stage for this production. He creates figures full of motion and energy as their swirling forms appear to dance across the stage. However, the roles of these characters ultimately remain up to the viewer.

Created in 1966, this original aquatint is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
