Historical Description

A beautiful and eclectic array of colors make up the face of Pablo Picasso Tete D’Homme Au Maillot Raye (Man’s Head With Striped Shirt), 1964. Though the striped shirt is made out to be the defining factor of this man, the navy blues do not draw attention so much as the bright yellow eye, the verdant hair, or the criss-crossing blue and red nose. The eyes of the man are almost inverses of one another, creating an interesting symmetry across the face. Similarly, there are two noses that one could follow down the face, each with the bridge pointing in a different direction. Picasso liked to explore the idea of multiple perspectives on a face or scene, and we see that clearly here with the opposite curves of the nose. A simple orange smile makes up final element of this fun-loving and colorful print.

Created in 1964, this color aquatint on Auvergene Richard de Bas paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in graphite in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in graphite in the lower left margin; published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris; printed by Crommelynck, Paris.
