Historical Description

Visually stunning and incredibly captivating, Chagall stirs our emotions and unearths our most romantic sentiments with The Bouquet. The foreground is ablaze with a lush vase of poppies and wildflowers, blending shades of sun yellows, violets, white, marigolds, and bright red. The checkered vase is a soft periwinkle blue, complementing the background which extends beyond in a vast landscape. The green, rolling hills and church steeple serve to anchor the composition, while we see the two lovers in embrace, floating above for all to see.

Created in 1949, this work was engraved by Charles Sorlier after an original work by Marc Chagall.  This work is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 400 in pencil in the lower left margin (aside from a few artist’s proofs), this work was published by Editions Maeght, Paris.
