No place inspired Chagall more than Nice, and this fruitful partnership of love and admiration is perfectly encapsulated in the magical work before you, Marc Chagall's Sirène au Pine (Siren with Pine), from Nice & the Côte d'Azur, 1967. A magenta siren floats above the beautifully detailed city, wistfully reaching for an enchanting bouquet of flowers. A lone pine stands beside her, seemingly striving to reach up to her position to ensure she doesn't fall behind. A sense of longing and desire fills the page, as the siren refuses to make contact with the viewer and rather appears to delight in her dreamlike world. What is she missing? What does she want? Only the gorgeous rich tones of reds, blues, and greens give way to her secrets.
The Nice & the Côte d'Azur series beautifully captures the romantic beauty, vivid landscapes and serene atmosphere of the French Riviera, a place that deeply inspired Chagall. He moved to the Côte d'Azur in the 1950s and found a new vital charge for his art there, incorporating its light, culture, and history into his work. In Côte d'Azur Chagall found a new wellspring of artistic energy in its light, culture, and history. He is often quoted as saying he felt "born for the second time" in Nice. This series showcases his mastery of lithography, using bold colors and fluid imagery to blend reality with fantasy.
This work is part of a set of 12 lithographs titled Nice and the Côte d'Azur that were created in collaboration between Chagall and Charles Sorlier. Created in 1967 after an original gouache by Marc Chagall, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887–Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left margin.
