Historical Description

Marc Chagall Nuit d'Été (Summer’s Night), 1973 transports the viewer into a whimsical scene rendered in vibrant lithographic line. The artist creates the illusion of the night by creating a deep black background. He adorns the field of black with illustrations of three figures in vivid color. The first of these figures, a man with a donkey’s head, stands in the lower center of the composition rendered in bright white. He holds a bouquet which he offers to a woman in pink in the upper right. A large orange dove hovers in the upper left corner overlooking the scene before it. This scene may be identified as one from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night Dream, with the character known as Bottom in the forefront.

Created in 1973, this color lithograph on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
