Historical Description

Marc Chagall Les Clowns Musiciens (Musical Clowns), 1980 presents an idyllic and whimsical circus scene, one of Chagall’s favorite subject matters. A sun-drenched circus ring with a cheerful audience is filled with various performers: in the center stands the long figure of a pierrot clown clad in magenta. Around him, a flute player with a goat headdress and and a musician clad in blue play the flute and violin. At the left, a chicken-headed performer bring out a horse while next to her a hula hoop act takes place. The scene is bustling with movement, all the characters are fluttering with a joyous energy and a romantic tenderness, both hallmarks of Chagall’s uniquely gentle and expressive style. There is a wonderful lightness in the shimmering lines and loose splashes of color, and the viewer is drawn into the illuminated and shimmering world Chagall poetically creates.

Created in 1980, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and inscribed ‘E.A’ (Epreuve d'Artiste) in the lower left margin; aside from the numbered edition of 50.
