Historical Description

In Marc Chagall L’ecuyere (The Woman Circus-Rider), 1956, Chagall revisits the circus theme, a subject he frequently celebrates in his other works. At the center of the work is a woman with her hand outstretched, looking outwards at a performance. Her gaze seems to be directed at the acrobat effortlessly standing atop a horse. Both the acrobat and the horse are rendered in delicate and elegant lines. Perspective is the most intriguing aspect of this work. While the woman could easily be an audience member, her outstretched hand is close enough to touch the acrobat, literally reaching out to experience the performance. Marc Chagall also draws our eyes to the spectacle unfolding using vibrant swaths of primary red, blue, yellow and bright green. The sweeping green and yellow mimic the circular nature of the circus tent, and carry a lively motion through the work. This work immediately reminds us of the excitement and awe of a visual spectacle.

Created in 1956, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right. This piece was Inscribed H.C. “hors de commerce” in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 100.
