Historical Description

In this mesmerizing composition, a woman with beautifully defined facial features is enchanted by the visions that lay before her. Lost in her own reality a mirage of sorts greets her, as a blue ladder leading to nowhere is encircled in traces of color that appear to waver in the wind. Chagall portrays this woman and her thoughts with graceful strokes, revealing in turn his own longing tenderness. One can easily see how he loses himself in the wonderment of this exceptional beauty.

Created in 1957 this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 90 in the bottom right.
