Historical Description

Considered to be one of the rare, early works of this edition, Le Dimanche is rich in saturated yellows, greens, and oranges; the print is full of life with subject matter very traditional to Chagall's extensive œuvre of color lithographs. Depicting profiles and faces of lovers embracing in the setting sun, the landscape of Paris begins to twinkle and glitter down below. Glimpses of a small village can be seen in the distance, perhaps a hint of what awaits for our 2 young lovers who seem to be lost in the whimsical and playful world of Chagall's acute imagination. Very bright and cheerful in person, this work is one of the brightest of the series created for Derrière le Miroir.

Created in 1954, this work was included in a catalogue titled Derrière le Miroir published for an exhibition of Chagall's work organized by Galerie Maeght. One out of a series of 9 lithographs, this work is annotated E.A. (artist's proof) out of the total edition of 75. Hand signed by Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) in the lower right margin.

It is fully documented and referenced in (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work) :

Framed in museum-quality, archival materials, this work is set in an Italian-style gold leaf frame. The shimmering tones of the gold moulding complements the cool tones in the work as the scalloped details serve to accent the expressive strokes throughout the work. Le Dimanche is completed with white, linen-wrapped mats and a matching gold inner fillet, finished behind an archival Plexiglas® cover.
