Chagall has created a magical land with Le Ciel that appears center around a magical sky filled with characters that only Chagall would know. Bursting with color, Le Ciel is able to transcend the frame and bring us within this marvelous scene.
Created in March, 1984, this lithograph was printed on watermarked Arches wove paper and was one of 12 other artist's proofs (epreuve d'artiste) numbered and signed. Chagall also signed the plate, revealing his name running along the top of the work (albeit upside down) as part of the overall impression.
A youthful playfulness embodies this scene of Chagallian mythological creatures brimming with life and rich in color. The world from the sky above pours down onto the land below, bearing gifts to the resulting spectators in awe at the sight. At the center of this 3-part composition, the 2 worlds collide in a friendly and humane exchange, linked together in mutual curiosity. The magnificent sky blue dominates Le Ciel and is accented by rich hues of red, green, yellow, and purple, bordered by a make-shift picket fence that Chagall has created to perhaps reference the domesticism of its characters. This is overall a very vibrant piece, echoing Chagall's skill in artistry perfectly.
It is fully documented and referenced in (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work):
