Historical Description

Marc Chagall The Artists Family is a remarkably detailed work in which a man and woman can be seen occupying a large portion of the image. The wife, Valentina Brodsky, looks towards her husband, Chagall, while he stares directly outward at the viewer seeming to capture their attention. Upon closer inspection of the work however Chagall's classic symbols, a horse, rooster, flowers, Paris, seem to fly around the artist as if in his head, ready to be drawn onto paper.

Even the couple itself is copied into another form right behind Chagall in the same exact embrace. A house can also be seen in the lower right of the image on a portion of Valentina. Chagall's family was his wife, as he didn't have any children, but in this portrait Chagall seems quite fulfilled by his wife and ultimate love, creating art.

Created in 1972, this original color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 25/50 in pencil in the lower left margin this work and printed on Arches wove paper.
