Historical Description

Relaying a sense of familial devotion and togetherness, this stunning work instantly captures the viewer's eye. A disproportionately large rooster stands next to a family, gazing with adoration and relaying a sense of protection and loyalty. The viewer can just glimpse the crescent moon suggesting, along with the presence of the rooster, that it is dawn and the day is just beginning. The viewer can infer by the presence of the rooster as well as the young child that this work comments on themes of rebirth and awakening, placing both in a positive light. Chagall utilizes hues of black and grey contrasted with saturated pinks and yellows, causing the rooster and the mother and child in particular to pop out at the viewer. Chagall also contrasts soft spots of color with thin, erratic lines, exemplifying his skill in creating an image instilled with a sense of whimsical peace and quietude while still highlighting the bold forms of his subjects.

Created in 1969, this original lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. This piece is numbered 18/50 (from the edition of 50) in pencil in the lower left margin.
