Historical Description

Marc Chagall L’ange au chandelier (Angel with Candlestick), 1973 is a stunning example of Chagall’s adept color-work. A brilliant blue night is illuminated by a central candle, cradled in the angels’ arms. The angel has four pristine white wings, and she looks down upon the earth below her. The warm yellow light from the candle touches on the top of the angels head and the wings, permeating the body of the angel. Two figures recline in the lower right colored in cool tones of blue and green, with some slight red in the clothing. Green plants also grace the lower left with small, delicate red flowers. The lithograph imparts a sense of peace and calm onto the viewer.

This beautiful and iconic composition, Chagall L’ ange au chandelier (Angel with Candlestick), 1973, was chosen to represent the National Museum of the Biblical Message. Taken from the right-hand section of an original work by Marc Chagall titled Jacob’s Dream, Charles Sorlier created a print edition especially for the opening of the Museum in 1973.

Created in 1973, this color lithograph was created before the poster edition marking the inauguration of the Musée National Message Biblique. Hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 200 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was published by Editions des Amis du Message Biblique Marc Chagall, Nice.
