Historical Description

Center stages in Marc Chagall Intimité (Intimacy), 1969 is a beautiful bouquet sitting on the table top. Placed in a water pitcher, the lively bouquet is full of reds, bright yellows, verdant greens, and touches of blue. The flourishing bouquet mirrors the clearly thriving love between the couple on the right side of the flowers. The pair looks deeply into one another eyes as they gently embrace. Outside the window the sky is a clear blue, and floating above it all is an angel. The colors of the angel match that of the flowers, endowing him with the same livelihood.

Flowers and lovers are some of Chagall’s more common subjects. In that way his lithographs have a very romantic feel. Along with his use of wonderful colors, Chagall captures the feeling of life and being in love in this lithograph. The angel dreamily passing across the scene in observation in only the cherry on top of this lovely lithograph.
