Relaying the impression that the viewer is glancing in through a window, this piece conveys an intriguing woman clasping a basket of bright red fruit. Behind her, a large animal reminiscent of a pony peeks out its head while, to the right of the composition, a large bouquet of budding flowers rests on the tabletop. Chagall adds charming details to this piece such as the yellow dots and rectangular pattern on the woman's dress and the bottle on the tabletop near the flowers. To the left, the figure of the woman extends ever so slightly past the dotted, window-like border, and the sleeve of her dress and strands of her hair become muted, depicted only through the use of soft blue lines. On the surface, this scene appears to be fairly domestic; a woman with a bowl of fruit stands by a window. Yet the image is unusual - a large pet stands in the background and the woman appears slightly off kilter as one blue eye stares directly at the viewer while the other black eye appears vacant.
Created in 1972, this original lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. This piece is an artist's proof aside from the numbered edition of 50, annotated 'Epreuve d'artiste' in pencil in the lower left margin and published by Editions Maeght, Paris.
