Historical Description

Marc Chagall David and Absalom (from 'The Bible'); Using rich deep hues, the artist depicts a revered biblical scene in a solemn and revered manner. Designed of simple, bold lines and textured blocks of color, Chagall captures the honor emanated between these biblical figures.

Created in 1956, this work is from the series 'The Bible' published by Térade. Printed on Arches wove paper, this work is signed by Chagall in black ink in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left, this work is in excellent condition with rich saturated colors.

The strength of the imagery in this work is heightened by the artist's use of bold dark lines and deep saturated hues. A bright green tree sits in the upper left, vibrantly standing out against the deep violet of the background. A figure stands beneath the tree, with a simply designed linear contour. The bold diagonal of the main figure, captures the viewer's attention with dark black lines and a deep red cloak. The bright highlights of his face stand out against the deeper tones surrounding the figure, creating a sense of depth and space. The knelling figure below contrasts with the red and violet surrounding him, with the strong blue hue of his hair and faint highlight in his face.
