Historical Description

Marc Chagall Multiflora, 1974 is a is an exquisite work which focuses around a central bouquet of brilliantly colored flowers in an array of vibrant hues of red, pink, blue, yellow, green, and orange. The bouquet appears more like a tree than a bunch of flowers, rooting up from the ground in the middle of the composition. Beneath this colorful floral arrangement, a couple embraces. They gaze into each other's eyes and appear as if deeply in love.  The flowers is a symbol of the couples' love as it blossoms and grows. This muted, romantic scene is deeply ingrained in Chagall. In many of his other works, the loving couple reappears. In the upper left corner a woman gazes down upon the two lovers, relaying a sense of other worldliness, as if she is somehow a guardian angel watching over the couple. Above all, this image represents the sweetness of romance. As with Chagall's other works, Multiflora, 1974 exudes a sense of joy, youth and freedom. Viewers are invited to delight in this loving, innocent scene.

Created in 1974, this color lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right. Annoted ‘Épreuve d’artiste’ (artist’s proof) in pencil in the lower left, aside from the numbered edition of 50.
