Historical Description

In the tabernacle where God was present to his people during their wilderness journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, there were various sacred objects, each made and positioned in accordance with precise instructions given by God to Moses. One such sacred object was a gold seven branched candlestick. Aaron, following his older brother Moses' instructions, sets up this seven-branched candlestick and positions it in the manner that the Lord had instructed. Chagall portrays Aaron with the seven-branched candlestick, standing slightly in front of the sacred object, his face illuminated by its bright flames. Aaron turns his head to the side and reaches out with his left hand in a gesture of blessing. He smiles slightly, his face calm and relaxed, exemplifying his faith in the Lord's guidance.
