Historical Description

Marc Chagall La Création de l'Homme, from la Bible (The Creation of Man, from the Bible), 1931–1939 is a marvelous work that bears his unique artistic vision. Blending his heritage, imagination, and seminal art style with familiar stories and passage of the bible, Chagall illustrates narratives from the Old Testament with emotion and spirituality as a way to connect and relate the recurring themes as to be broadly interpreted, Chagall was able to produce a deeply human and personal body of work that remains relevant today. La Création de l'Homme depicts the creation of man; in the center of the etching are two human figures, one that seemingly glides through the air, glancing behind him as his wings beat on. In his arms is the second figure, unconscious but ready to be awoken. The Angelic figure carries the creation of God in his arms as he floats towards earth, ready to bring life and God’s will below.

Long influenced by religion, in the spring of 1931, he traveled to the Holy Land in what became a life-changing experience, both spiritually and creatively. Creating Marc Chagall's The Bible series in 1931-1939 right after his trip and picking it up again twenty five years later in 1952-56, the first series based on his fascination comprised of two volumes and 105 etchings. His second series, which we will be discussing, is the series titled Drawings for the Bible which comprised of 24 color lithographs illustrating tales from the Bible that was published by Verve, Paris and printed by Mourlot, Paris from 1958-1960.
