Historical Description

Joan Miró Mambo, c. 1978 is a dramatic and exuberant work. Greeting the viewer from his monumental paper home, the figure in Mambo, traced in splatters, washes and energetic black forms, reaches his arms wide. Like his sibling in Danseuse créole, this dancer's presence overflows the borders of the sheet. Scribbled orbs, looped commas, and swathes of color animate the page and act as mementos to the artist's touch. Racing paths of black break out from the dancer's body to end in horns, hooks and balls, electrifying the entire print. This etching and aquatint is one of Miró's best efforts and its gorgeous array of color, tonality can only be completely appreciated in person. Between the larger-than-life humanoid creature and the monumental size of the print, Mambo infuses the room with energy. It is graphic art at its most striking, and was conceived near the end of the artist's life, when he could draw on a lifetime of experience and artistic vision.

Traced with glowing red-orange, deep black and contrasting accents of blue, orange, yellow and green, Mambo is a masterpiece of technique set apart and above by Miró's ever-present lightness of heart. The bulging eyes and cylindrical nose peering out from the dancer's torso confirm this.
Created in 1978, this color etching and aquatint with carborundum on Arches paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Mourlot, Paris.
