Historical Description

This hand-colored silkscreen is incredibly vibrant with rich, dark saturated colors and shows off Dine’s skill in printmaking. The work features a large outline of a heart, spreading out to almost the edges of the composition. The heart is filled with an amalgamation of dark colors and you can see the markings of Dine’s hand in the black lines and splotches throughout the work. Bright spots of green, orange, and blue fill the space outside of the heart. Dine created many works with hearts in different mediums, from sculptures to paintings to prints. He was inspired by artists Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow, and his work has similar elements of assemblage, or three-dimensional collage. Though this silkscreen is two-dimensional, the hand-coloring gives the work a textural feel, which is a common theme throughout a lot of Dine’s work. The Hand-Colored Viennese Hearts II is a stunning example of Jim Dine’s print work and is incredibly eye-catching in person.
