Leaning seductively on the elaborately decorated wall of the room, a half-dressed woman stares challengingly in Henri Matisse Odalisque debout au plateau de fruits (Odalisque Standing with Fruit Tray), 1924. Nude from the waist up, her legs are veiled in an embellished sheer skirt. On the floor, sitting atop a luxurious carpet, is a fruit tray with many ripe offerings, a blooming bouquet of flowers, and two slippers. Matisse began exploring the theme of Odalisque’s in 1923 after a trip to Morocco. Inspired by the decorative art there, the wallpaper and the carpet in this piece are lush with intricate detail. The sustained eye contact of the woman and her open position invite the viewer into the intimacy of the moment. We see the room as Matisse did, submerged fully in the exotic beauty of the room and the soft beauty of the model.
Created in 1924, this lithograph on Japon paper is hand signed by Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 - Nice, 1954) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left.
