Historical Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec W.H.B. Sands, éditeur, 1898 shows a profile made out of whispery lines, which strike delicately across the page. Groupings of long, mostly straight lines make up the slight hair still on Sands’ head, as well as his beard, mustache, and eyebrows. Many lines are moving diagonally from the upper left to the lower right, which influences the way that our eyes move across the paper. The man looks serious, and Toulouse-Lautrec gives us a sense of his character through a rather compositionally simple portrait. W.H.B Sands was Touslous-Lautrec’s English publisher, and commissioned a few albums of lithographs from him during their association.

Created in 1898, this drypoint etching on zinc on Japan paper is stamped with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s (Albi, 1864 – Château Malrôme, 1901) monogram ‘TL’ in red in the lower right margin. From the edition of around 25 known impressions, 15 of which are numbered. Published by Manzi, Joyant, & Cie, Paris in 1911.
