Georges Braque Tête grecque (Grecian Head), c. 1950 stands out immediately due to the brilliant and complex hues of blue that permeate the entirety of the lithograph. Against a light blue background which brings light to the work, stands a white star. Within the star lies the namesake of the piece – a Grecian head rendered in a deep blue with delicate features delineated in white. We see the profile of the head with elaborately styled hair which points this way and that – all crowned with a stiff circle of hair. The hair points forward over the eyes and towards the right side of the lithograph, drawing our eyes from left to right across the page. Braque was fascinated with antiquity and draws on it for inspiration in many of his works. Tête grecque (Grecian Head), c. 1950 is a delightful reinterpretation of Classical antiquity that charms the viewer.
