Utilizing fluid lines and earthy tones of browns, oranges, and greens, Braque Nature Morte a la Palatte (Still life and the Palette), 1960 replaces the cubist formality of his early compositions with an organic quality that would come to characterize the artist's later works. Braque provides a distinct foreground and background, including the table upon which the palette rests as part of the overall composition, and offers the viewers an intimate vantage point, as though they are gazing into the artist's private home. The composition is well-balanced, as Braque places a large plant on the left side of the table and illustrates a palette on the right. Above the palette is a stemmed cup and what looks like an orange. The image is almost ironic as it seems as though the palette was intended for painting a still life imagery of the plant. Overall, the colors, all in muted tones of blue, green, brown, and orange, combine harmoniously to produce a subtle yet marvelous still life image.
Created in 1960, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 200 in pencil in the lower left margin.
