Representative of freedom and peace, the bird was one of Braque’s favorite symbols. Though the bird was a reoccurring subject within his works, this particular bird stands out as one of Braque’s most captivating depictions. In the summer of 1955, Braque visited the bird sanctuary in Camargue, a location abundant with exotic birds. These birds sparked a lifelong fascination for Braque, who repeatedly drew inspiration from these graceful, winged creatures. This particular depiction of a beautiful white bird soaring against a luminous yellow background is perhaps one of Braque’s finest interpretations. Braque’s Cubist inclinations shine through, as he breaks down the bird’s figure into geometric components. The sharp angles of the bird’s form contrast nicely with the soft edges of the yellow background, further highlighting this resplendent subject.
Created in 1959, this work is hand signed by the Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and Numbered from the edition of 300 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris.
