Braque Head in Profile and Star from Georges Braque - New Sculptures and Plate Grave, 1960 Georges Braque - New Sculptures and Engraved Plaques. This exquisite work uses a simple, elegant composition. The profile of an androgynous figure is an expression of enchantment and fascination upon his or her face. Star-like shapes in black and blue flit in the right corner and appear to be the objects of our subject's attention. This piece relays a collage-like effect, as if one of a kind in the world, for the figures appear to be effortlessly glide and float across the surface, seamlessly resting upon and beneath one another. The imagery directly harkens back to Braque's beloved motive of the bird. Even though the star is a decidedly different symbol, it also seems to float and drift a bird with its arms spread wide.
Created in 1960, this color etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Georges Braque (1882-1963) in pencil in the lower right margin, a Hors Commerce (artist's proof) edition, inscribed 'G / 8' in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the edition of 50; published by Albert Morancé, Paris.
