Historical Description

Georges Braque The Order of Birds (L'ordre des oiseaux), 1962; Blurring the border between abstract and representational, the bird at the center of the image drifts serenely downward. The deliberate simplicity of this work is apparent. Only three colors (blue, pink and brown) compose the image, none of which meld together. The bird colored in dark blue glistens clearly against its subdued background. Without overwhelming our eyes with superfluous detail, the gestural marks of the bird directly convey the essence of flight.

Created in 1962 this color etching is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 75 in the lower left margin; published by Au Vent d’Arles, Paris 1962 and printed by Crommelynck, Paris.
