“I describe what I do as psychological cubism. Picasso painted a violin from four different perspectives at one moment. I do the same with psychological states.”
— George Condo
In this highly abstract composition, Condo demonstrates his signature skill in creating a controlled chaos. The canvas is dominated by deep azure tones, paired with brass yellow and crimson red, creating a striking visual impact.
The present lot seems to be composed of a series of floating musical instruments, with all the forms distorted and reimagined through the artist’s unique visual language. The elements seem to materialise and dissolve into the surrounding space, creating a pulsating rhythm echoed across the composition. Fragmented forms hint at Cubist influences, yet the work remains distinctly his own. The seemingly casual gestural placements reveal the artist’s deep understanding of compositional balance and chromatic harmony. Dynamic spatial relationships create a sense of movement, mirroring the temporal quality of music. Forms emerge and recede, establishing a visual rhythm that invites prolonged contemplation.
The red instruments dominate the lower half of the work, resembling bass strings or architectural supports. These elements provide a structural counterpoint to the more fluid, improvisational passages of the upper half. In the upper register, arched forms and the resplendent golden reliefs evoke a sense of Baroque classicism, possibly alluding to the ecclesiastical roots of Western musical tradition. There is a variety of surface texture created by the layers of paint, adding to the depth and sensory richness of the work. The palette is anchored in deep azure, enlivened by ochres, crimsons and olive greens, all dancing across the canvas with a jazz-like spontaneity.
