Historical Description

Framed by a beautiful rainbow boarder, Frank Stella Going Abroad from The Waves, 1989 pops off of the paper in a burst of dynamic color. This is not the only framing device that Stella uses. A second rectangular white frame sits within the first. Most of it is obscured by the collage on top of it, though we can make out some light green geometric detailing.  The forms within this frame break the frame, and in fact almost appear to be exploding out of the center. This gives a wonderful sense of movement and depth to Stella Going Abroad. The hazy, almost sprayed look of the red and black adds a soft texture. Full of a variety of colors and textures, Going Abroad contains Stella’s adventurous and eclectic artistic spirit.

Created in 1989, this silkscreen, lithography, and linoleum block with hand-coloring, marbling, and collage on T.H. Saunders and Somerset papers is hand signed and dated ‘F. Stella ‘89’ in pencil in the lower right center. A unique color trial proof, numbered "CTP 4" in pencil in the lower left center aside from the numbered edition of 60, 10 artist’s proofs and 4 printer’s proof; published by Waddington Graphics, London.
