Historical Description

Bright sun yellows inundate this work, allowing Léger's artistry and creativity to leap from the sheet. A lazy, summer's day awaits these builders who relax sleepily along the scaffolding that is appropriately bathed in sunlight. Léger is able to translate a feeling of relaxation, peace, and warmth through this beautiful work, allowing us to connect with this piece both on an emotional and figurative level. His elaborate, swirling details award the sunlight a particular character and personality which seems to move all around the shapes and objects. The scaffolding, meanwhile, divides the space evenly and geometrically, placing our three lone builders in the center along a curved beam. Further accented by a bright, green trees whose limbs extend into the central composition, this work is truly one of Léger's more brighter, hopeful pieces.

Created in 1951, this original color lithograph is hand-signed by Fernand Léger (1881 - 1955) in blue ink in the lower right margin.
