Historical Description

Damien Hirst Untitled, 2002 regales us through an explosion of vivid colors as they stretch and dance across the sheet. A flurry of red, green, yellow, and hints of blue immediately catch the eye as the edges of the paint create sharp peaks through the board. Bursts of pastel yellows, oranges and blues lay underneath the vibrancy, allowing a moment of solace while adding to the complexity of the composition. Screen-printed text is placed in the middle of the composition that reads, “DAMIEN HIRST | IN A SPIN, THE ACTION | OF THE WORLD ON THINGS” in gold lettering, providing a layer of depth to the spin painting.

Most of Hirst’s spin paintings can be characterized by the works’ lengthy titles and their scintillating colors. He describes them as “childish….in the positive sense of the word.” Taking a risk, spin paintings require patience and the relinquish of control to the chance of spontaneity; allowing the paint to be fluid and move on a whim without direction. The results of the spins are controlled purely by the artist’s color choices and the motion of the machine.

In 1996, the exhibition No Sense of Absolute Corruption (Gagosian Gallery, New York) included spin paintings which rotated mechanically on the wall – Hirst’s response to being repeatedly asked which way up they should be installed. The rotating spins also provided a solution to Hirst’s feeling that the implied movement is essential to the success of the works, noting: “The moment they stop, they start to rot and stink.”

Created in 2002, this acrylic on canvas is a unique and original work.
