Historical Description

Chic and simplistic, Damien Hirst’s Methamphetamine, 2004 is a vibrant and eye-catching grid of colored dots in a rectangular field of white. Nine columns and eighteen rows of these dots rendered in bright colors from across the color wheel are methodically placed evenly throughout the composition. Despite its joyful color palette, the work’s systematic arrangement gives it a clinical aura. This orderly quality is further suggested by the title of the piece, borrowed from the name of a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system, taking on a white, odorless form that is bitter tasting. Methamphetamine, 2004  is a striking manifestation of Hirst’s exploration of color and experimentation with presenting them in an orderly, removed, yet undeniably beautiful way.

Created in 2004, this etching in colors on Hahnemühle paper is hand-signed by Damien Hirst in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 115 in pencil on the reverse (there were also 30 artist's proof). Published by Paragon Press, London.
