Historical Description

Monet La Plage et la Falaise d'Amont, (Beach and the Falaise d’Amont), 1894 depicts a beachside scene. The orange colored hues bring warmth to the scene. Floating just off the shore is a small boat. Boats of a similar size can be seen resting half out of the water with some pulled completely up onto the beach. The ocean looks relatively calm around the beach, with waves lapping gently at the sand. In the distance, the ocean becomes more powerful, with white sea foam spraying in every direction out by the Falaise d’Amont. This lithograph is beautifully completed in Monet’s impressionist style, with soft strokes filling the page.

Created in 1894 after an original painting of the same title, this color lithograph on chine appliqué on wove paper is hand-signed by Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) in pencil in the lower left margin; also hand-signed by the engraver G. W. Thornley in pencil in the lower right margin; from an edition of 25 hand-signed proofs by both Claude Monet (Paris,1840 - Giverny, 1926) and G.W. Thornley; printed by Belfond & Cie and published by J. Mancini, Paris.
