Historical Description

Claude Monet La Douane, Effet de l’après-midi (The Customs House, Afternoon Effect), 1894 displays a calm and peaceful afternoon on the coast. A small cottage, the customs house, sits on a bluff overlooking a calm sea. Monet depicts water with such care that it truly comes to life. It looks blustery on the coast, as the grass is swept up into small tufts by the breeze. The water too churns quietly below. The side of the house facing the viewer is white as it bakes in the sun, and we can practically feel the heat at our backs and smell the salty sea air as we ponder this picturesque scene.

Created in 1894 after an original painting of the same title, this color lithograph on chine appliqué on wove paper is hand-signed by Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 – Giverny, 1926) in pencil in the lower left margin; also hand-signed by the engraver G. W. Thornley in pencil in the lower right margin. From an edition of 25 hand-signed proofs by both Claude Monet (Paris, 1840-Giverny, 1926) and G.W. Thornley; printed by Belfond & Cie and published by J. Mancini, Paris.
