Historical Description

Arman Pâte de Vere Figure (Venus de Milo) Entitled Tranchlucide is a fascinating sculpture distinct in its color and form. At a glance, the work clearly depicts a nude female body directly inspired by the famed Venus de Milo by Alexandros of Antioch. She stands in the contrapposto pose, commonly associated with Greek sculptures. Arman thus appropriates a renowned traditional style and transforms it into a work of innovative modern sculptural abstraction. Every portion of her body is carefully sliced and stacked, creating a form that appears to move and vibrate despite its stagnant pose. Such deconstructed and sliced sculptures constitute a significant portion of Arman’s oeuvre. Furthermore, the image appears almost as a visual illusion, subtly manipulating the ways viewers perceive space, dimension and form. From every angle, the work offers the viewer a unique arrangement of deconstructed layers. As such, this sculpture transforms a classical art object into a beautifully repurposed readymade. The work is composed entirely in a translucent cloudy blue hue, emphasizing the dreaminess and surrealistic quality of the work. This sculpture perfectly encapsulates the essence of Arman’s unique creativity and innovative style.
