Historical Description

Charged with electric coloration, Warhol chooses an image of a Native American woman and her sleeping child to render this version of the maternal scene, a motif recurring throughout all of art history. Andy Warhol screenprint Mother and Child, 1986 is from Warhol’s acclaimed series Cowboys and Indians in which the artist used images from popular culture that depicted stereotypes of American Indians. Through the use of overly saturated color, and the graphic, pop art stylization, Warhol iconizes Mother and Child, thus celebrating and exposing the misconceptions that the image stands for in popular culture. Much of Warhol's work is political in nature, yet he himself did not always verbalize or confirm this - in a way it leaves it up to the viewer to see societal commentary within Warhol's art.

Created in 1986, this color screen print on Lenox museum board is hand-signed by Andy Warhol (Pennsylvania, 1928 - New York, 1987) in pencil in the lower left. Numbered AP I/50 in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 250, this work was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York and published by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc., New York.
