Mildred Scheel was a passionate advocate of philanthropy for cancer research during the 1970s and 1980s. Both a medical doctor and wife to former German president, Walter Scheel, Mildred was responsible for founding the German Cancer Support Society in 1974. Andy Warhol sought to immortalize her image in one of his iconic color screenprints which are entirely glistened and accented with diamond dust. Produced for a fundraiser for Mildred’s German Cancer Support Society, this work is one of the few portraits by Warhol in which he composed identical images juxtaposed side by side.
Frayda Feldman describes this series best:
“Warhol intended his portraits to be seen – as vanitas images, history paintings, or simply glamour poses – he did more than any other artist to revitalize the practice of portraiture, bringing renewed attention to it in the avant-garde art world. He reflected the desires and dreams of a new decade and expanded his cast to include the latest characters from the world of sports, television, and politics and also dramatically escalated his portrait commissions” (Feldman 3rd ed. pg. 22-3).
