Andy Warhol Ingrid Bergman, The Nun, 1983 was based on a still from a 1945 movie The Bells of St. Mary that Bergman stared in. Using color blocking, Warhol breaks up the portrait into multiple square and rectangular segments. From teal and pink, to yellow, orange, and blue, the colors stain different parts of Bergman. The outlier in this is her face, which is represented in black and white with delicate outlining in yellow. Hints of blue are added to her eyes and her lips are a soft pink color. Bergman has her hands raised and clasped as she gazes slightly up in prayer. Because Bergman’s face is the lightest part of her portrait, it draws attention to her illuminated features, creating central focal point in the stunning portrait.
Created in 1983, this screenprint on Lenox Museum Board is hand signed by Andy Warhol (Pennsylvania, 1928 - New York, 1987) in pencil in the lower right; an artist’s proof numbered from the edition of 20 in pencil in the lower right; aside from the edition of 250, 5 printer’s proofs, 30 HC, and 30 trial proofs; printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York; published by Galerie Börjeson, Malmö, Sweden.
