In his trademark style, Warhol creates four works that depict the instantly recognizable symbol of the hammer and sickle. Conveyed in bold hues of black, red, white, and grey, these two tools symbolize the industrial proletariat and peasantry. The depiction of these two tools together symbolizes the unity between industrial and agricultural workers conceived during the Russian Revolution. Subtle variations in color and composition distinguish each of these four works, yet they retain a strong sense of unity that is best apparent when they are displayed as a set. Strong contrasts of color and form cause these images to pop, instantly commanding our attention and making them true works of pop art.
Created in 1977, these four original color screenprints are printed on Strathmore Bristol paper. These four works are numbered from the edition of 50 [aside from 10 Artist's Proofs, 2 Printer's Proofs, and 1 HC (hors de commerce) proof]. Hand-signed by Andy Warhol (Pennsylvania, 1928 - New York, 1987) in pencil in the lower left, these works were printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York and published by Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc., New York.
