Andy Warhol's Gertrude Stein screenprint was created in 1980 as part of his Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century series. The artwork, sometimes referred to as F. & S. II.227, was printed on Lenox Museum Board. This bright image of Gertrude Stein features rich hues, hand-drawn red and blue lines, and abstract geometric patterns in the backdrop, exemplifying Warhol's unique Pop Art style.
Gertrude Stein was not only a writer, but also a prominent art collector and patron of the early twentieth century. Warhol's inclusion of Gertrude Stein in his iconic Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century series highlights her prominence in the Parisian avant-garde.
Living in Paris, she and her brother Leo Stein collected a revolutionary collection of modern art, supporting artists such as Matisse and Picasso and playing an important role in promoting artists long before they were widely appreciated.
Stein was Picasso's close friend and early patron, and his support helped him obtain prominence. Her iconic portrait of him depicts his transition to Cubism, which she also promoted.
Many of the artworks she owned are now housed in prominent museums. Her support shaped early twentieth-century modernism in literature and visual art.
Other examples of the piece can be found in museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
