Alex Katz Water Lilies (Triptych), 2019 pays tribute to the great Claude Monet in a work clearly inspired by Monet’s Water Lilies.
Alex Katz divides the work into three panels, thereby earning the triptych label. The panels feature bright sunny yellow lily pads and six white blooms, two on each panel. While clearly referencing Impressionism and Monet’s work, Katz was also heavily influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. With flat blocks of color and simple composition, Katz incorporates both influences into one captivating work. The contrast between the saturated yellow and the inky black is incredibly eye-catching. Katz creates energy throughout the composition with the positioning of the lily pads and flowers, swirling across the panels. Katz puts his own stylistic spin on this iconic work by Monet, and the result is a brilliant display of Katz’s creative skills.
