Alex Katz Reflection 2, 2021 is a piece that plays with the contrast of light and shadow and their reflections on the water surface. Katz aims to immediately convey those expeditious visual impressions from which the audience derives an essential idea about the phenomena, which he has often referred to as a “flash” or “explosion” before an image settles into the viewer’s field of vision. Reflection 2 personifies his lifelong pursuit to capture the present in color and with bold flat colors that mirror each other, the bottom half with minor additions and changes that suggest the movement of water, changing the
perception and consciousness of the viewer on the relationship between art and nature. Thick lines of green cascade across the blue mirrored sky in the bottom portion of the work, the trees swaying in the wind. By mirroring his work in the lower part of the canvas, he used a formal device that strayed away from his traditional “environmental landscapes” to invent the genre. Under Katz’s realism – without the sentimental, introspective or superfluous – gives this moment of insight to an ever-changing sense of synchronicity that exists simultaneously in the image and in its subject.
