Historical Description

A whimsical portrait with bold contrasts, Pablo Picasso ceramic Tete d'Homme aux Cheveux Longs (Man's Head with Long Hair), 1968-1969 appeals to our response to texture, depth, and space. There is a wonderful interplay between lines, as they cross and curve to create a masculine face with pointed eyes and long nose. The nose is created by three long, straight lines that occupy the middle third of the face, and end in two circular nostrils- very prominent on the face. His mouth is neither frowning, nor smiling and the much of his face is obscured by a bushy mustache, rendered in the same way as his eyebrows. As the title notes, long hair cascades around this man's face with a distinguishing goatee, contributing an element of theatrics to this intriguing piece. All Pablo Picasso ceramic plaques are made with earthenware clay - usually red. This is where the intense red color comes from that is used to create detail on the face. It contrasts beautifully with the black to create crisp defining lines. The simplicity of the lines, but the emotion that they convey in the face, is a mark of Picasso's mastery of the medium and his intuition about the human condition.

Created in 1968-1969, this red earthenware clay square plaque printed with engobe pad (black) is from the edition of 200. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
