Historical Description:

A three dimensional quadratic figure composed of staggered cubes floats amidst a sea of two dimensional squares. In this stunning original acrylic painting, Yvaral plays with the purple color spectrum. Dark purple, nearly black, squares in all four corners of this square composition gradually fade to lighter shades of lilac towards the center. Through his use of light and shadow and his very careful study of color gradation and geometric form, Yvaral creates the illusion that this central, three dimensional figure drifts across the canvas from left to right and continues out forwards toward the viewer, as if the viewer could almost touch its seemingly protrusive form. It appears as a series of never-ending stairwells reaching out in all directions, from which the climber can never escape.

Created in 1973, this original acrylic on canvas is hand signed by Yvaral (1934 - 2002) in black ink on the front lower center. Hand written, signed, and dated by the artist on the verso: "YVARAL | "Structure Cubique B" | 1973 | [signature] No. 1439."

About the Framing:
This work is set in an archival and museum quality modern silver metal frame. The minimal quality of the frame enhances the optical effect of this work while not detracting from the enjoyment of this piece. The muted tone and metallic in quality of the frame contrasts with this work, accentuating the bright colors throughout the image.

Biography of Jean Pierre Vasarely Yvaral

Combining the poetry of geometry with figurative art, Yvaral has created a wholly original body of artworks that has received the praise of important critics and museum curators around the world.

Born in France, Yvaral grew up in a complete artistic ambiance.  Working alongside his father, Victor Vasarely, he discovered and explored the beauty of geometry in art.  The inspiration of the French Impressionists and Pointillists is evident in Yvaral's vibrant paintings.  The artist juxtaposes pure colors next to one another to achieve the illusion of three-dimensional forms.
