Historical Description

Victor Vasarely Topaze Blanche Positif, 1967 is a brilliant compilation of colors and forms which pops out at the viewer. White almost-circles are placed in color squares and surround a highly contrasting white diamond in a black square. The three dimensional quality of the work makes for exquisite depth and complexity. Central to the composition is an offset white square on a black background. These two elements create the highest point of contrast within the piece, and draw the eye into the center. It is a bold visual statement. The truncated circles bring their flat sides together to create the appearance of multicolored squares on each side, moving diagonally, of the central white square. This brings an interesting point of balance that is not centered on the midline, but instead on the diagonal axis.

This work comes from a time in Vasarely’s creative life when he created what he called “the plastic alphabet.” This alphabet is composed of the duality of color and form which Vasarely viewed as one aspect. The actual ‘letter’ is composed of a base square with some geometric composition upon that. Vasarely was able to create infinite combinations by switching one component. The units were easily maneuverable allowing for variation in every new piece while still keeping a strict geometry.

Created in 1967, this wood relief multiple painted in colors is hand signed by Victor Vasarely (Pécs, 1906 – Paris, 1997) in ink on a label affixed to the reverse; numbered from the edition of 50 in ink on a label affixed to the reverse.
