Historical Description

Utilizing his mathematical arrangement of images and colors, this work perfectly embodies the full range and strength of Vasarely's geometric art. Vasarely uses colors of purple, red, green, and blue to convey a three dimensional figure composed of square grids. This central figure appears as a warped cube, simultaneously jutting out towards the viewer and receding away from the viewer. Depending on the viewer's perception, the figure is a cube with its three exposed sides collapsing in towards its center or the figure is a room with three sides, from which three spherical forms push against the walls attempting to get in. This work is a true optic masterpiece as the viewer must focus to pinpoint different ways of viewing this image.

Created in 1990, this original color serigraph is hand signed by Victor Vasarely (Pécs, 1906 - Paris, 1997) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 300, this piece was printed by the Silium Atelier, Paris. To create this piece, Vasarely created a maquette from which 34 screens (34 colors) were cut for the edition.
