Tom Wesselmann Steel Drawing: Monica Lying on One Elbow with Robe, 1986-1997, is a charming depiction of a reclining nude woman wearing only a robe. Combined with the unique nature of the medium and its popular subject matter depicting a nude women, these sculptural works are amongst his most highly sought after. The figure’s posture and casual attire imply a relaxed demeanor as does the revealing position of her partially open robe, a candid style in which Wesselmann was known for. Resting on her elbow, the woman props her body into a frontal position, inviting the viewer into a glimpse of her private life. Hints of red highlight the woman’s feminine attributes outlining her nipple, lips, and on nail polish on her toenails. The one-dimensional central figure is illuminated with a bright palette and flattened composition and suggests a delicate and elegant simplicity against a white background. The robe is outlined in green and decorated with floral arrangements around the collar and sleeves to give an appealing and cheerful allure. The robe slightly exposes one of her nipples and captures an intimate and candid moment. Her hair is slightly disheveled and further conveys an an impromptu moment in time. The absence of eyes and a nose gives the figure a certain anonymity that encourages the viewer to more closely focus on the simple aesthetic Wesselmann employs to portray a beguiling image.

Created in 1986-1997, this enamel on laser-cut steel is hand signed by Tom Wesselmann (Cincinnati 1931- New York City 2004) and numbered from the edition of 25.
